Under Her Wings…and HIS
The story that explains “under her wings”:
After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park , forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno’s damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched on the ground at the base of a tree.
Sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings.
The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies.
Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast….because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would live.
‘He will cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you will find refuge.’ ~ Psalm 91:4
After reading this story, I could only think of the number of firefighters who lost their lives. What a tragedy that so many were lost…but my prayer is that in their last moments that they knew the protection of being under God’s wing.
The SONG “UNDER HIS WING” and its composer’s story:
William Orcott Cushing (1823-1902) served as a Unitarian pastor for many years. He was well known as a very kind and compassionate man whose love for Jesus was acted out daily towards his fellow man. After his wife’s death in 1870, Reverend Cushing resigned from his pastorate and began writing hymns.
Cushing wrote more than 300 hymns. He wrote Under His Wings in reference to Psalm 17:8, “Hide me under the shadow of Thy wings. Ira Sankey (1840-1908) composed the music for the hymn and published it in his Sacred Songs No. 1, in 1896. Sankey composed the music for close to 12,000 hymns in his lifetime.
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.( Refrain)Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.
