New Book by N.W.Boyer
This has been a summer of writing. My home in Virginia, USA, is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. I had a couple goals in mind for the six months we spend here before returning to Florida for the winter. The first was to finish my historical novel based on “Whatever Happened to SS General Hans Kammler?” The creative juices began to flow and finally it was a reality.
The next thing I wanted to accomplish was to write a second book in a series I had started on the Blue Ridge Mountains. This time, I wanted to know some real people with real lives whose families had settled in these hills many generations ago. I found not only a person whose farm land actually belonged to General Robert E. Lee’s father, but others who had five generations of farmers in the area going back to the Civil War.
Most had vivid memories of the past and wanted to share them. I rode my Ford truck down the mountain and into rolling farm areas to meet with them over their kitchen tables and in their small businesses. One family grows apples on one hundred acres of a steep mountain and has been doing so for a very long time. In the Spring, the apple blossoms lay a blanket of white over the hillsides.
The ride to and from these places brought unusual moments of peace as I watched the farmers bailing their hay, horses and cows grazing in the pastures and the occasional vehicle (usually a truck) ride passed me and give me a wave. Up here, it is the one index finger wave without taking the hand off the steering wheel. Thus, my new book became a reality and is now published, Old Timers of the Blue Ridge and More. The best part was getting to know the wonderful people of the Blue Ridge. Now, the trees are turning gold, red, and yellow. The colder winds are beginning to blow. I will pack up soon and head south…but my many memories and photographs will go with me to start a new book in the series. (See the books mentioned in this blog below with a link to see more. )
I hope you will take a moment to look at these links and pass this blog on to anyone who has a love for culture, travel, and history.
