Vaccine and Democracy

Yes, I’m due for the 2nd vaccine and I plan to take it…along with my husband. Every doctor we have talked to has advised us to get it…from our primary doctor, heart specialist, and as of this morning, my dermatologist. Even our podiatrist has had his two shots. As doctors, they tell us that we don’t know everything there is to know, but in any medical procedure we weigh the risks along with the positives.

What then is the concern?

The concern is the governmental pressure to control private decisions and life in general. The pressure is also being put on large and small companies to control their work force. Most people I know want to do the right thing for themselves and people in general. They don’t mind their temperature being taken at business doors or a sign that says “wear a mask.” Some have concerns, however, because they believe there is the potential that the government can go too far, which is not our democratic way of life. This, they believe, is what may be happening with “lock downs’ or even “total lock downs” in some areas. They worry about privacy in our own homes.

This leads to some quotes by those who may be in positions of authority…or are regularly in our news with their advice.

Recently a quote by Dr. Fauci to CNN: “If I’m fully vaccinated and my daughter comes in the house and she’s fully vaccinated … common sense tells you that in fact you don’t have to be as stringent,” Fauci said. But, he added, “we want to get firm recommendations from the CDC” on what people can and cannot do when they are vaccinated.”

What we “CAN or CANNOT DO”? Most Americans do not want the government to tell us what we can do, especially in private. Is there a trend…or a threat here to democracy? Some would say, “Yes.”

A concerned citizen’s response to the good doctor’s advice: “Understand…this is a virus. You cannot run from it, you cannot hide from it. This is no different than natural disasters, there is no escaping, no immunity to mother nature. No one is saying that you shouldn’t take steps to protect yourself, as all people are. However, people have different opinions of what that means, different levels of what they are willing to accept and it is not their responsibility to answer to others. Furthermore, it is not the governments job to tell us how we should live our lives. They are welcome to provide guidelines and encourage people to follow. But to buy into the idea that they have the authority over free citizens to force their obedience is very dangerous slope, for those on both sides of the political spectrum.

In Dr. Fauci’s statement, he wants to get ‘firm recommendations from the CDC” (Centers for Disease Control).

What is the CDC? (from Wikipedia) If you are a little rusty on their history and organizational make-up, here’s some more information:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a national public health institute in the United States. It is a United States federal agency, under the Department of Health and Human Services, and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia because malaria was endemic in the Southern United States. The Communicable Disease Center was founded July 1, 1946, as the successor to the WWII Malaria Control in War Areas  program of the Office of National Defense Malaria Control Activities.

Here are a few other facts since the beginning of CDC:

Since the 1990s, the CDC focus has broadened to include chronic diseasesdisabilities, injury control, workplace hazardsenvironmental health threats, and terrorism preparedness. CDC combats emerging diseases and other health risks, including birth defectsWest Nile virusobesityavianswine, and pandemic fluE. coli, and bioterrorism, to name a few.

The CDC is integral in working with the WHO (World Health Organization) to implement the International Health Regulations (IHR), an agreement between 196 countries to prevent, control, and report on the international spread of disease, through initiatives including the Global Disease Detection Program (GDD)

As of 2008, CDC staff numbered approximately 15,000 personnel. No listing was given as who at the CDC actually makes the decisions handed down to the federal government or to the states. Whatever the recommendations, they would most likely have to be approved by the Director of the CDC. Who is she?

The Director of the CDC is Rochelle Bersoff, appointed by President Biden

In 1991, Walensky received a BA in biochemistry and molecular biology. In 1995, she received an MD from John Hopkins School of Medicine and trained there in internal medicine from 1995-98. Walensky then became a fellow in the MA General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital infectious Disease Fellowship Program. In 2001, she earned an MPH in clinical effectiveness from the Harvard School of Public Health.

All of this may be informative, but back to private decisions on things in life that matter to the everyday person who wants the best for everyone, as we make efforts to control the Covid-19 virus and other health issues.

Recently a young woman, who would like to start a family sometime, is wanting to wait to see how the vaccine effects people…until there are some real, post-vaccine data. Since her state had lowered the age and her company said “all must be vaccinated,” she was fired from her job. Does she have a right to this personal decision? Of course, she should. We are told over and over, women should have control of what happens to their bodies…but not if she just wants to wait?

You can see the dilemma…personal freedom vs government controls. We know of other countries whose citizens have no personal rights. It is obvious that a democracy does not fall into this category…unless we allow it.

Pray for Our Country
