PEACE…a beautiful word

When a world is upside down, there can be no better word than that of “peace.” A definition of peace is a concept of societal friendship and harmony in the absence of hostility and violence. In a social sense, peace is commonly used to mean a lack of conflict and freedom from fear of violence between individuals or groups.

Maybe some proverbs from around the world says it better or wiser, but notice the emphasis on being ready for war. The world has little to say about being solidly in God’s care.

  • Better to have bread and an onion with peace than stuffed fowl with strife. ~ Arabian Proverb
  • Better dry bread in peacetime than meat in wartime. ~ Hungarian Proverb
  • Eternal peace lasts until the next war. ~ Russian Proverb or If you wish for peace be ready for war. ~ Traditional Proverb

Some proverbs begin to think about the souls of men and women and relationships:

  • True peace between nations will only happen when there is true peace within people’s souls. ~ Native American Proverb
  • A harvest of peace grows from seeds of contentment. ~ Indian Proverbs
  • When you can’t find peace within yourself, it’s useless to seek it elsewhere. ~ French Proverb

Wisdom in the man, patience in the wife, brings peace to the house and a happy life. ~ Dutch Proverb

What do the Holy Scriptures tell us about PEACE?

But now in Christ Jesus , you who once were far off, have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, Who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation. Ephesians 2:13-14

The things which you have learned and received and heard and saw in Me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
