TEACHERS…and the Unbelievable
Before becoming a writer, I was a classroom teacher for over twenty years. I can honestly say that I LOVED IT! Now, for one reason or another, teachers are leaving the profession by the hundreds…and thousands. WHY?
Blame it on stress, due to the virus. Blame it on anything else, but some reasons may be completely UNBELIEVABLE, but true, when it comes to the leadership over these teachers.
An article, written by By Kelsey Koberg, quoted an agreement between the teachers’ union and school districts in Minnesota.. They could not say things exactly as they meant them, but used words that would make one’s head spin.
Here is the quote:
“…if excessing a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the district shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population.”
Confused? Here it is in plain English: If you are white skinned and not dark or black skinned, you will be fired.
IMPORTANT: Let me say upfront, I have taught with many excellent teachers of all races. They were admired for their abilities with the children and there was never any discussion of being hired, fired or moved around in any other positions because of their race.
Could this be another reason that teachers are leaving, as badly as we need them?
Get a grip…school boards and other administrators of schools!!
Our children need ALL good teachers…qualified teachers of all races and not someone who can be recruited off the street to fill in for the education of our future citizens and leaders of our country. The statistics, in comparison with other countries, tell us that our children are falling far behind in math and reading.
Our friend, who is an Academy graduate and military veteran, who was also teaching math at the Academy, has just been hired to teach high school students, so they can pass their math exam… in order to be able to graduate from high school. By the way, this Academy grad happens to be white, over-qualified, but in Minnesota he might be fired, simply because he is not of the race described in the above quote.
According to Forbs in the ranking of American students in math and science, in a comparison with China and Russia, “The People’s Republic of China ranked first in 2021 and the Russian Federation moved up from third to second place, swapping places with the U.S.
I write this with a prayer that soon educational leaders and administrators will come to their senses. Our children need us. Our country needs the best professionals. Don’t push them out the door.
Remember who is waiting in each classroom.
Give them pride in their country. Give all of them pride in being Americans. Not only should they have the best teachers of all races, but should remember that the Pledge of Allegiance which states, “under God” means anyone’s faith, because God of the Universe is the God of all peoples.
Help them and all adults to be respectful and stand when honoring our country with the American National Anthem. Pray for all of this and our teachers before we have lost our way in this nation.
