The Spirit of Truth or Error

This is an information age. Our forefathers would be amazed at all that enters our brains through this age of immediate news and thoughts from around the world.

For our more recent relatives, a printed newspaper was something of which to marvel. Yet, in any form of information there is always the mixture of truth and error. The world has learned that propaganda can change the actions of men and women. Say things long enough, whether shouted loudly or whispered softly, it will most likely be believed. It was true during wars and is still true today. This is when we need to have God’s wisdom more than ever!

How do we distinguish between truth and error? This is a gigantic question. To put things in simpler form, if I make an spelling error while typing this blog, my program quickly highlights it for me. It will sometimes even automatically change the spelling….unless there are two words that have different meanings but are legitimate words. For instance if I wrote “fog” and I meant “blog,” the error would not be shown. I have to figure out which word is appropriate in my sentence. It is left up to me. That is the difficult part of knowing truth from error. We have to figure it out…sometimes on the spot!

Error or falsehoods can also be hidden in some form as a truth. Those who go against the love of God can not be speaking for truth. If the results of words or actions brings bitterness, hatred or death, it is not of God. Keeping up our guard to weigh what is of God and not of God may be a challenge, but it is what the apostles and believers before us had to do. God warns us of this through the words of St. John.

“We (believers) are of God. He who knows God hears us. He who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error...and we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. (1 John 4:6, 16-17)

Walking in the way of truth is what we have to do…even if there are costs.

Will it be easy to go against the wave of pressures that we find in the world…from people, communities, and governments? Certainly not. Not everything we read, see or hear is truth…as we all know.

“Boldness” to decipher truth and walk in it, through our judgments now and in the days to come, will need to be practiced. How do we do that? If the red flag goes up, we may believe that God, through His Spirit, is warning us of an error. Each time we turn away from error, we will strengthen our resolve to do only what God wants from us. Practice, as with anything…sports, speaking, cooking, etc., makes perfect.

Our prayers should be “Father in Heaven, help me to know the difference between TRUTH and ERROR. Give me Your wisdom. Help me to walk in Your ways and not be blinded by the world’s ideas. Make me a light for Your love, truth and peace. In Christ, I pray. Amen”

For whatever (whoever) is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world….our FAITH. Who is he (or she) who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (1 John 5:4-5)
