The White Rose

There are many examples, leading up to and during World War II, of resistance movements. Usually it was a group outside Germany within countries that had been taken over by Hitler’s armies. The French are well known, as well as others, who risk everything for FREEDOM and eventual peace.

It may not be as familiar with some of my readers that there were Germans who also resisted. In fact, there were several movement who paid a great price for their heroic deeds. One was known as the White Rose. Perhaps three of the most famous were a brother and sister, Hans and Sophie Scholl, who were students in the University of Munich. Christoph Probst, a married father of three, was also part of the White Rose movement. They believed that the German people had suffered greatly under Adolph Hitler and the crimes he was committing against humanity was totally against their conscience and Christian beliefs.

White Rose Resistance at University of Munich

Exactly what was the White Rose?

The White Rose ( Weiße Rose) was a non-violent, intellectual, resistance group in the Third Reich led by a group of students. The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign that called for active opposition to the Nazi regime. Their activities started on 27 June 1942, and ended with the arrest of the core group by the Gestapo on 18 February 1943. The Scholls, as well as others, carried on distributing the pamphlets, faced show trials  by the Nazi People’s Court  (Volksgerichtshof), and many of them were sentenced to death or imprisonment.

Hans, Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst were executed by guillotine four days after their arrest, on February 22nd, 1943. During the trial, Sophie interrupted the judge multiple times. No defendants were given any opportunity to speak.

The Final Days Presentation of Sophie Scholl on trial.

The group wrote, printed and initially distributed their pamphlets in the greater Munich region. Later on, secret carriers brought copies to other cities, mostly in the southern parts of Germany. In total, the White Rose authored six leaflets, which were multiplied and spread, in a total of about 15,000 copies. They denounced the Nazi regime’s crimes and oppression, and called for resistance.

In their second leaflet, they openly denounced the persecution and mass murder of the Jews.  By the time of their arrest, the members of the White Rose were just about to establish contacts with other German resistance groups like the Kreisau Circle or the Schulze-Boysen/Harnack group of the Red Orchestra. Today, the White Rose is well known both within Germany and worldwide. (Wikipedia)

A surviving member of the White Rose gave this description of life in Germany at that time:

“The government—or rather, the party—controlled everything: the news media, arms, police, the armed forces, the judiciary system, communications, travel, all levels of education from kindergarten to universities, all cultural and religious institutions. Political indoctrination started at a very early age, and continued by means of the Hitler Youth with the ultimate goal of complete mind control. Children were exhorted in school to denounce even their own parents for derogatory remarks about Hitler or Nazi ideology.”— George J. Wittenstein, M.D., “Memories of the White Rose” (Wikipedia)

Should this not be a history lesson for all of us today, who have the democratic privilege to vote for our officials…or see that our own society’s voice may be slipping away with more and more government control?

What motivated Hans and Sophie Scholl to stand strong under such oppression?

Sophie’s own words tell of her CHRISTIAN CONSCIENCE. This was the great motivator to do something important in the midst of evil. Here are some of her quotes:

Stand up for what you believe in, even if you are standing alone.”

“An end in terror is preferable to terror without end.”

“How can we expect fate to let a righteous cause prevail when there is hardly anyone who will give himself up undividedly to a righteous cause?”

“The real damage is done by those millions who want to ‘survive.’ The honest men who just want to be left in peace. Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. “

I will cling to the rope God has thrown me in Jesus Christ, even when my numb hands can no longer feel it.”

(quotes from article by Bill Muehlenberg)

On the back of Sophie’s indictment, she wrote FREEDOM (from Institute fuer Zeitgeschichte.)

DIVERSITY and AMERICA

We are at a critical time in our country. This is a pure understatement! Nevertheless, most of the Americans that I know believe that we are ALL extremely blessed to be citizens of this country. Ask any person who has lived under tyranny or in a communist state, how many rights and privileges they could call their own.

We are a DIVERSE people. Some of our ancestors came here because they wanted to come. They left everything to be part of a free country… a part of the “New World.”

Other of our American citizen’s ancestors were brought here in chains. This was tragic and it has been a long struggle for them over generations. Our Native Americans also suffered great loss. The generations of today have much to be grateful for as they pursue an even better life. The greatest country…with the greatest privileges must be protected, not destroyed.

We are a FAMILY of Americans and we never should forget this. Just like in many families, there will be those who disappoint us with their lack of caring, rebellion, selfish actions toward the family. Our American children are going to emulate what they learn from us…of all races and all creeds…hopefully for the better… unless they choose otherwise.

Here in America, there are more rights for all Americans than anywhere around the world. Why do we see the eagerness to cross our borders? Because we stand for LIBERTY and opportunity given here for a better life is the answer. It is for all of us to build on these rights and NEVER allow them to slip away.

Yes, we are as diverse as our country itself is diverse. As we spread from sea to sea, the beauty and bounty of this land must not be underappreciated by any of us.

Charlie Daniels shows it best in his video. “My Beautiful America.” May he rest in peace…as he passed away on July 7, 2020.

GOD BLESS AMERICA and heal her wounds.

No Greater Love

Today in the U.S. we are celebrating Valentine’s Day.  It is a day to give our special someone a note of love, flowers, or a delicious box of candy.  It may be overrated, but it helps the bottom line at the stores and it is always appreciated by the recipient of such thoughtfulness. Valentines-Day

Today, I want to write about the greatest of all loves.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”

  John 15:13

When Christ laid down His life in payment for all sins, He paid the greatest price possible.  It is in His sacrifice that we know the GREATEST OF ALL LOVES.

There are those who decide to give their lives to sharing this love with others. In some cases, it costs them their own lives.   We have all heard of martyrs that lived long ago and are often described as saints today.  Did you know that there are modern-day martyrs who have risked everything to bring God’s love and compassion to people around the world?

The man I will write about is an American, whose story is found below:

LIFE OF BROTHER JAMES:
Brother James was born into a family of farmers near Stevens Point, Wisconsin, USA, on September 21, 1944. He attended grammar school and then went to Pacelli High School in the city of Stevens Point, where he met the Brothers for the first time. In September 1959 he entered the Juniorate in the state of Missouri. After three years there, he was admitted into the Postulancy program and then entered the Novitiate in August 1962, when he took the habit of the Brothers and the religious name Brother Leo William. Later, like so many other Brothers, he went back to using his baptismal name.

He was assigned to Cretin High School in Saint Paul, Minnesota for three years. There, besides teaching classes in Spanish, English, and Religion, he supervised school maintenance and he coached American-style football.
In August 1960 after making perpetual vows, he was sent to Bluefields, Nicaragua. He taught there until he was assigned to Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua in 1974, where he was the Director. Under his leadership, the school population grew from 300 to 800 students. Brother Santiago also accepted the task of supervising the construction of ten new rural schools. His religious superiors ordered him to leave Nicaragua in July 1979 during the time of the Sandinista revolution. It was feared that since he worked for the Somoza government he might be at risk. For that reason, he returned to the United States and again taught at Cretin High School in the fall of 1979 and he participated in the Sangre de Cristo renewal program in the state of New Mexico in 1980.
He was sent again to mission territory, this time to Guatemala, in January 1981. He taught at the secondary school in Huehuetenango and he also worked at the Indian Center, where young indigenous Mayans from rural areas studied and trained in agriculture.
In the afternoon of February 13, 1982, he was shot several times by three hooded men and he died instantly. Attempts to identify the assassins were unsuccessful. After funeral rites in Guatemala and in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he was buried in the parish cemetery in Polonia, Wisconsin.
His character and personality:
His own writings and other declarations pertaining to him, before and after his death, show us his character and personality. Before leaving Pacelli High School to go to the Juniorate, the Brothers that knew him wrote that “he was very generous, pious, honest, docile and that he was very well-ordered and tidy; he did not smoke, he received the sacraments weekly, he got along well with his classmates; he devoted two and one-half hours per week to house chores.”
A Brother who was his Director in the Scholasticate and at Cretin High School, his first community, recalled him as “an intelligent person, although not an intellectual, jovial, easy to relate with, preferring physical work to sports, with a deep faith and love for his religious vocation, but with a certain tendency to come late to class and community prayers.”
His Call to Missions:
While he was still in Nicaragua, his old desire to work on the missions was obvious. From Nicaragua, he wrote about the satisfaction he felt while working for the very poor. Responding to the question if he felt afraid about the shootings that were taking place around him, he wrote: “Are you kidding? I never thought I could pray with such fervor when I go to bed.” In one of his last letters, before he died, he showed that he was aware of the situation in Guatemala and the possible personal consequences for him. He wrote in January 1982: “I am personally weary of violence, but I continue to feel a strong commitment to the suffering poor of Central America. … the Church is being persecuted because of its option for the poor. Aware of numerous dangers and difficulties, we continue working with faith and hope and trusting in God’s Providence.” He went on to write: “I have been a Brother of the Christian Schools for nearly 20 years now, and commitment to my vocation grows steadily stronger in my work in Central America. I pray to God for the grace and strength to serve Him faithfully among the poor and oppressed in Guatemala. I place my life in His Providence. I place my trust in Him.” This Brother of the Christian Schools was martyred on February 13, 1982, at the age of 37, in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. This was the day before Valentine’s Day.

MILLER-BEATIFY-ARTIST Brother James Icon

Brother James Icon was painted by Artist Nick Markell of Minnesota. He painted the Brother in overalls with a gold nimbus encircling his head and a lamb in his arms. He spent a month painting with acrylic wash and gold leaf in his apartment while listening to Gregorian chant.

Whatever happened to SS General Kammler after WWII?

In 2016, I wrote my first historical novel. This was available online as a blog and then published as a paperback.  More recently, I renewed this book called The Seeds and the updated version is now available on Amazon.

What is this book about?    A brief summary is below:

The Seeds asks the question: “Whatever happened to SS General Hans Kammler?”

After World War II, a number of high-ranking officers fled to places like Argentina. This question seemed to be of great interest to my blog readers. Some readers wrote emails that they knew where General Kammler had lived. One even said the General was an uncle who was elderly and had escaped prosecution.

General Kammler, as portrayed in this book, is entirely fiction. However, the accounts of him, are based on historical facts.   From 1944, General Kammler was head of advanced weapons development in Nazi Germany, including the Me-262 jets, the V-2 rockets and perhaps even the exotic Bell Project. The enormous interest in General Kammler led me to explore the thoughts of where he might be hiding and exciting portrayal of him in The Seeds novel evolved.

Locations as described in this novel, such as the World Seed Vault in Norway…sometimes referred to as the “Doomsday Seed Vault”… are actual places that are active today.  For many readers, other locations, people and culture of the Middle East are generally not understood by people around the world. The story involvement in the Middle East only increases the mystery behind the writing of this historical fiction.    Link to The Seeds

New Devotional Book with Photography and St. Paul’s Words

Devotional Life of St Paul jpeg2

After a trip to Greece this year to follow the “Footsteps of St. Paul”, the inspiration came to share my photography and words of Holy Scripture that St. Paul spoke to the early churches.  He and the men and women during the years of spreading the Gospel through missionary journeys suffered greatly the persecution that eventually led to his beheading in Rome.  Because of them, we have the writings of the Holy Scriptures today of the good news of the Christian faith.

Follow with me now some of his words to the Jews in the Synagogues, the faithful in the churches and to us, the modern day church.  I have included archeological finds and ruins as well as the amazing monasteries of Meteora.

This devotional is now available on Amazon in paperback and e-Book form.

Boyer Writes… Power of Blogging

POWER…POWER…POWER to the people worldwide!    Yes, this power is what blogging your thoughts is all about when you decide to be a blog writer.  You will be able to reach people around the world. Since becoming a blogger and following others on their blogs, I have actually made friends with people around the world.  Through the internet and blogging programs like WordPress, we are able to speak our minds, concerns and joys as well as thinks we have learned from research and reading before writing.  Not all will agree with what we have to say.  No problem…for we have the freedom to read or not read.  We can choose to write or not write.   Yes, I’m using that glorious word…FREEDOM!

Below is a map that I photographed from my WordPress site. (Thank you, WordPress, for keeping such great statistics to share with us….even the names of the countries that view our posts.)  Over a period of my nine years of blogging, the world has practically been covered. Amazing!

BOYER WRITES map of views worldwide 2017_resized

This map shows 55,857 views of Boyer Writes by people around the world. The red is location having most views. The yellow are all other countries that have viewed…some numerous times. Uzbekistan, a few countries in Africa and far north seem to be the only countries who have not viewed Boyer Writes since began blogging in 2009.   Thank you Readers and Viewers!  This is the power of Free Speech worldwide that has the power to transcend obstacles… political or otherwise.

When I first began writing my books, I knew I had more to say and wanted a book that I could hold in my hand.  That was accomplished in the last several years.  I also knew I wanted to sit down and write to friends and the world something on my mind that I did not have time to put in book form. I’m not putting down anyone who loves…loves…LOVES….their Facebook, because it serves a purpose for some.   I, however, moved away from that venue to be able to write more in-depth on any particular subject. What I was having on my plate to eat…as some wrote me about… just didn’t seem interesting enough to me or anyone else for that matter….but history, music, and inspirational messages do find a place worth spending my time and effort.  To each his or her own.

Young Man Using Laptop At Home

Gee, this blogging is simple enough…logical, practical…and I’m given help when need to ask questions. WordPress looks like the way I’m going to start writing. Is it possible I could be a real author?

Many senior citizens are on the computers daily, writing to children or grandchildren.  They have a life story that they can share with people around the world.  Their stories and wisdom in living life can prove to be inspirational in so many ways.  How about giving it a try?    The youth of today will find you online and may need all the help they can get. seniors on computers

I would encourage anyone thinking of not only reading a blog, but actually starting a blog for themselves, to do so in 2018.  It isn’t hard and you can learn step by step. With practice on what you can do…write…add pictures…add videos etc…you’ll soon be a pro!    ( Here is WordPress Link. Tell them Boyer Writes sent you.)

N.W. Boyer…A Year of Writing in 2017

nancyboyer1.jpg

This year has been an exciting one for me.  I have had the opportunity to interview many people for my books and actually seeing the books go to print.  Today I would like to share with you my 2017 books that followed my books for children in previous years.

(The links are in blue.)

One of my most recent books, SPENCER’S MILL, is fiction set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.  It is a cast of characters with an exciting plot that incorporates the history of the decline and failure of mill industries in North Carolina and Virginia when those businesses went to other countries around the world, leaving people without jobs.  It is the story of their strength to carry on and find enriched lives for themselves.

OLD TIMERS OF THE BLUE RIDGE

Old Timers of the Blue Ridge is a series of interviews with people who have relatives that go back to the Civil War.  The stories they shared are interesting reading and gives insight into the cultures of the mountain people.  They tell of what it was like to grow up in the Blue Ridge…their joys and sorrows.

CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENTS   This book, North and South at the Blue Ridge Mountains, gives a short overview of the Civil War and the leaders from both sides. It explains the Reenactment that takes place yearly in October in the mountains of Virginia, near Ararat, VA.  I included a large selection of photographs of the reenactment which gives a beautiful description of this event. Men and women dress the part of the period. The main goal of the Civil War Reenactors is to not forget the history of our country.

THE SEEDS       This novel originated from a post on my blog that I wrote in 2010 on Boyer Writes  It was on SS General Hans Kammler and asked the question: “Whatever happened to Gen.Kammler?”  After World War II, a number of high-ranking officers fled to places like Argentina. I look forward to 2018 when I plan to complete a Memoirs Book called MY STORY.  I will begin with as early as I can remember in my childhood.nancy as a babybw 6x9

My remembrances of my days in boarding school and the courage that I found in my faith in Christ during years of adult hardship will be an honest and open account.  My family history and doors that opened for me to travel the world as a Christian teacher and missionary will also be part of the story.  The joy that I found when God brought into my life the husband I have loved for over 35 years is a part of “waiting for God” to do wondrous things that we know not of.  Looking back I know that the things that happened to me and around me were often most extraordinary.

It is obvious to me that everyone has a story to tell about their life.  As I have had the opportunity in the books mentioned above to share many stories told to me by others, it is time to write about my own life.

Merry Christmas to all my readers and to all a wonderful NEW YEAR!

The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia

blue ridge Overview Best

The Blue Ridge Mountains, steeped in history and hard working people, is a special place.  It is our privilege to live here part of the year and in doing so, we have seen the beauties of the land and its people.   My recent book, Old Timers of the Blue Ridge and More, is a collection of stories behind generations of families who have worked the land and farmed the fields.  The fog rolls in over the mountains from North Carolina into Virginia.  It is a silent mist that cools the summers and brings the breeze that is felt daily.

Below is a video that I have produced with many of the photographs that I have taken of these wonderful mountains in the years that we have been here.  I hope the sights and peaceful sounds will fill your day with God’s love and joy.

Even now, in early August,  the fields are ready for a summer harvest and the corn is growing high.  The peach juice drips down the chin with every bite.  The aroma of peach pie baking in the oven is in the air.peaches 2017.JPG

The migrant workers, along with the farm owners, work late into the night to harvest and package the produce, moving it on to our groceries far down the mountain.   The rumble of the tractors and the rhythm of the trucks pass our house as they move on to the Painter warehouse, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway,  to be processed.

Take the winding road down the mountain until you find acres and acres of apples, peaches and more at the Harold Orchards in Ararat, Virginia.   They have been farming this orchard for generations.  H.C. told me that without the workers who come in from Mexico, his business would go under.  Many of these workers come year after year to bring in the harvest.

It is our privilege to honor these hard-working farmers who produce the crops of corn, cabbage, broccoli, apples, peaches and much more.  Without them or the workers they hire, our grocery stores would be dependent on foreign providers.

Thank you, Gentlemen.    You are the best!

Getting Perspective…what Glory!

moon-and-medeoriteIt was three in the morning. As I looked out the window onto a dark mountain whose tiny night lights shined in the valley, I saw something spectacular.  It was the heavens above…not the earth below.  There are no street lights in the mountains to interfere with the glory  of the heavens that a cold night reveals….millions of stars and planets.   It certainly puts one into a more realistic perspective.  Problems seem to disappear…and one has to truly wonder with the writers of the Scriptures, “What is man that You are mindful of him.”   If God is big enough to make all this and still see the sparrow when it falls, then He can take care of me.  I think of my Mother who passed away at 93 and wonder what she is experiencing in this great universe.  Truly the Heavens declare the Glory of God.

One may ask, “How do I know there is a real God and how can I know that He knows and loves me?”    This video may help you with that answer.  Produced by outstanding scientific minds who know faith, this is truly a beautiful view of our world and universe.

New Book by N.W.Boyer

This has been a summer of writing.  My home in Virginia, USA, is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.  I had a couple goals in mind for the six months we spend here before returning to Florida for the winter.  The first was to finish my historical novel based on “Whatever Happened to SS General Hans Kammler?”    The creative juices began to flow and finally it was a reality.  The Seeds Book Cover

The next thing I wanted to accomplish was to write a second book in a series I had started on the Blue Ridge Mountains.  This time, I wanted to know some real people with real lives whose families had settled in these hills many generations ago.  I found not only a person whose farm land actually belonged to General Robert E. Lee’s father, but others who had five generations of farmers in the area going back to the Civil War.

Most had vivid memories of the past and wanted to share them.  I rode my Ford truck down the mountain and into rolling farm areas to meet with them over their kitchen tables and in their small businesses. One family grows apples on one hundred acres of a steep mountain and has been doing so for a very long time.  In the Spring, the apple blossoms lay a blanket of white over the hillsides.

The ride to and from these places brought unusual moments of peace as I watched the farmers bailing their hay, horses and cows grazing in the pastures and the occasional vehicle (usually a truck) ride passed me and give me a wave.  Up here, it is the one index finger wave without taking the hand off the steering wheel.   Thus, my new book  became a reality and is now published,  Old Timers of the Blue Ridge and More.   The best part was getting to know the wonderful people of the Blue Ridge.  Now, the trees are turning gold, red, and yellow.  The colder winds are beginning to blow. I will pack up soon and head south…but my many memories and photographs will go with me to start a new book in the series.    (See the books mentioned in this blog below with a link to see more. )old-timers-of-the-blue-ridge-and-more-cover

THE SEEDS

Whatever happened to SS. General Hans Kammler?

This is the question that many history readers are asking and will enjoy THE SEEDS novel that attempts to answer it.

The Seeds is now on Amazon as a published book and on Kindle.
Amazon book cover back and front

THE SEEDS, a historical fiction novel by N.W.Boyer

THE SEEDS  originated from a blog that I have written for a number of years called Boyer Writes. One post on World War II and the Nazis, who fled to Argentina and other places, seemed to be of great interest to my readers. I was amazed that one particular post called What Happened to General Hans Kammler? received hits every day for years. Some readers wrote me that they knew where General Kammler had lived or that he was an uncle who was elderly and had escaped prosecution. Readers even started to make comments back and forth to one another because they were certain that they knew the answer to the question of the General’s whereabouts.
Who was General Hans Kammler?
General Kammler, as portrayed in this book is entirely fiction. The accounts of him, based on historical facts is that Kammler, from 1944, was head of advanced weapons development in Nazi Germany, including the Me-262 jets, the V-2 rockets and perhaps even the exotic Bell Project.
This fascination about General Kammler also led me to explore the thoughts of where he might be hiding and thus, this novel evolved.
First, I gave it birth online with the help of pictures and videos found on the web. Many of the places described in the novel, as the World Seed Vault in Norway, sometimes referred to as the “Doomsday Seed Vault” or the people, places and cultures of the Middle East, are generally not known or understood by other parts of the world. This only increased the mystery behind the writing.

I hope you will follow or return often to this blog site to see what other books  I have written.   Thank you for reading.

The Seeds novel by N.W. Boyer takes off

THE SEEDS is a historical fiction novel based on “What ever happened to SS General Hans Kammler” a blog that I wrote  in 2010.  Almost everyday, there are people reading this post with a number of comments including one reader who said Gen. Kammler was his uncle.   This may tell us how interested readers are in World War II.

The novel, The Seeds, speculates on  those who may have evaded capture and punishment for terrible war crimes or who may have been assimilated into the West as engineers and scientists to further  space exploration.    2010 blog on Gen Hans Kammler

In the case of SS General Kammler, the mystery novel, The Seeds, brings the reader to modern times  where Gen.
