The Amazing Brain

When we think of God’s great creation, it is most likely that we think of the stars, the beautiful planets, or a great mountain peak. Perhaps we don’t focus as much on the the things that are closest to us…our body and especially the brain. Many of us have dear friends or family members who are suffering with dementia. It leads us to wonder if we could also have a fight with this disease in years to come.

What are some of the stages of dementia?

Early stage: the early stage of dementia is often overlooked, because the onset is gradual. Common symptoms include:

  • forgetfulness
  • losing track of the time
  • becoming lost in familiar places.

Middle stage: as dementia progresses to the middle stage, the signs and symptoms become clearer and more restricting. These include:

  • becoming forgetful of recent events and people’s names
  • becoming lost at home
  • having increasing difficulty with communication
  • needing help with personal care
  • experiencing behaviour changes, including wandering and repeated questioning.

Late stage: the late stage of dementia is one of near total dependence and inactivity. Memory disturbances are serious and the physical signs and symptoms become more obvious. Symptoms include:

  • becoming unaware of the time and place
  • having difficulty recognizing relatives and friends
  • having an increasing need for assisted self-care
  • having difficulty walking
  • experiencing behavior changes that may escalate. (from WHO)

Recently, I heard a good, general conversation on Sunday Morning about this common problem. I thought some of the suggestions could be helpful because Dr. Gupta makes it clear that there are general things that happen as a person grows older that may or may not actually be dementia or the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease. Most likely most of us have experienced forgetting someone’s name and wondering about it. He also gives some suggestions for helping your brain to stay healthy. When we think of the fact that all our learning, memory and abilities stem from the brain that God has given us…It is truly amazing! “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made… Psalm 139:14
