Your Pursuit

Everyone is pursuing something. It is a daily activity. For the homeless and destitute, it may be where to get their next meal. For the young person, it may be how to get the degree they are hoping for or a job…and there are plenty to be had. It might even be the pursuit of getting a girlfriend of a boyfriend to like…or love me more. For the fit and athletic, it could be to try to win some type of competition. The elderly’s pursuit may be simply to try to stay on one’s feet…for all elderly know the consequences of falling may be completely devastating.

PURSUING can be a passion…a hope…a dream, but have we looked at what God wants for us to pursue?

Interestingly, as I went through some Bible verses, I found the answer given in the Holy Scriptures. This is what it said:

“FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NOT EATING AND DRINKING, BUT RIGHEOUSNESS AND PEACE AND JOY IN THE HOLY SPIRIT. FOR HE WHO SERVES CHRIST IN THESE THINGS IS ACCEPTABLE TO GOD AND APPROVED BY MEN. THEREFORE, LET US PURSUE THE THINGS WHICH MAKE FOR PEACE AND THE THINGS BY WHICH ONE MAY EDIFY ANOTHER.” (Romans 14:17-19)

It seems that whatever you are pursuing, it should be to accomplish these things:

Righteousness (Loosely translation…is goodness, kindness, ethics etc.)

Peace…. We, and the world, could certainly use some of this…but also peace within our souls, emotions and thinking.

Joy You may be thinking…”what is real joy?” Joy may be hard to describe, but we do know it is something we feel…a sense of delight…of cheer.

With these three things in mind: Righteousness, Peace and Joy, we come to what is a repeat within the verse…“Pursue the things which make for PEACE.”

If it is in the workplace, home, in school…or with the everyday man and woman we meet in life….we should be first and foremost thinking of our behavior that makes for PEACE…because that is what we are told by God to do.

Think about it. What disrupts your life and causes anything and everything, but PEACE? Whatever that is…determine that you will bring peace to that situation.

I had lunch today with a friend who knows a great deal about the culture of our Native Americans. She said that whenever there is an argument going on between their peoples, instead of continuing to keep the battle going because it is going no where or becoming disruptive and out of hand, the person will simply do a thing that may seem strange to those of us not of this culture. They fold their arms and turn their back…and stand there, saying nothing more. It may mean “I am dead to this disruptive behavior or in some cases, “I am dead to you.” We would hope there would be some reconciliation, but this action has some power in it. Well, I’ve never used it, but sometimes deciding to keep one’s mouth completely closed is a way of bringing peace to a situation.

Look about you and decide that joy and peace are a great alternative to some thing that you may be experiencing today. “… FOR HE WHO SERVES CHRIST IN THESE THINGS IS ACCEPTABLE TO GOD AND APPROVED BY MEN…” What we pursue should always be pleasing to God because He wants the best for us in our lives.
