Assurance

We all like guarantees. If we purchase something, we want to know that there is a guarantee that if it doesn’t work, we can return it. This gives us a feeling of assurance or confidence.

What about spiritual assurance?

Divine assurance is the peace that reminds us that no matter what the circumstances, all things work together for our good.

Can we have confidence in this kind of spiritual welfare or even our eternal salvation?

If we look at many religious beliefs, there are attachments that give the believer less confidence in the after-life or eternal salvation. We usually call it “works” or “working one’s way toward an acceptance by God.” If we truly believe the Holy Scriptures, there is no way that we could do enough good or be a perfect person to achieve eternal life on our own. The Scriptures tell us that “all have sinned and come short.” (Romans 3:23)

Therefore, it is only through Christ, who paid the ultimate price for us that we can have COMPLETE ASSURANCE. In essence, by saying we have to add some of our own works to acquire redemption, we are saying that Christ did not do enough. Our belief in His total atonement for all wrongs is our only way to the confidence and peace we desire. We don’t have to “hope” that we will be forgiven because as a believer we are given that assurance.

Will there always be those who doubt and are not assured? Yes, even the Disciple Thomas doubted, when after the resurrection, the disciples said “We have seen the Lord!” But he (Thomas) said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25)

We are given words of assurance even in our unbelief:

In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace Ephesians 1:7

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

What do I do?

Pray and give your heart to Jesus Christ. Tell Him that you want to believe and ask Him for forgiveness. Then, tell someone that you have done this. It is your confession of faith.

If you are already a believer and still wonder about your assurance of salvation, pray and thank God for His COMPLETE sacrifice for your sins on the cross. The Holy Spirit will bring that peace into your heart.

Will I continue to “fall short” until the day I die? Yes, but God is still faithful to forgive for He has told us:

” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:9)

There is a hymn called “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine.” Here are a few words:

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of His spirit, washed in His blood

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior, am happy and blessed
Watching and waiting, looking above
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love
