It was my privilege a year or so ago to write a book about the men and women of the Blue Ridge Mountains who had served in various American wars. (Men and Women of Valor in the Blue Ridge) Two people that I featured in this book were Sharon and Frank Plichta. Little did I know that Sharon would want to tell her story in depth when we met for lunch just recently.
I am proud to announce that my new book about Sharon as a military nurse in Vietnam has just been published with Barnes and Noble. Here is a summary:
Memoirs of Sharon Plichta is the story of an Army nurse who served our wounded and dying troops in Vietnam. For her service, under enemy fire, Sharon Plichta was awarded the Bronze Star. It is her story of growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and after nurses training enlisting in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She tells how she leaned on her faith in God during those difficult days as well as the joys she found in living the life of a military nurse. It is her goal, by sharing her experiences, that this part of history may not be forgotten by future generations. Included in this book is the history of other American wars and the outstanding nurses who served in those days, from the Revolutionary War to the longest war in Afghanistan. I am privileged to have been able to write this book and share Sharon’s important story. N.W. Boyer
