Treasure of the Heart

Some things are so special that we say that we “treasure” them. It may be something that someone gave us. Perhaps it is a special word someone said. Not all things that are “treasured” can be held in the hand.

This was true the night that Mary and Joseph were paid a visit by the shepherds who were doing what they usually did…protecting their sheep on the hillside. As they came to see the Christ Child, they repeated the amazing story to the new parents of what had happened to them that night. The Holy Scripture says that “all were amazed” at what they had to say. It was unusual…a phenomena that would be told and retold throughout the millenniums.

(Luke 2:8-14) “In that region there were shepherd living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. but the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people. .to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you …you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.; And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace among those whom He favors.”

It was the shepherd’s message that Mary already knew. She, a virgin, had just delivered the Son of God who was to be the Savior of mankind. Her faithful fiancée, Joseph, stood by her, knowing that he was part of a miracle. As for Mary, the Scriptures tell us that all that she knew was that the angel who had visited her before she had Jesus and the angels that came to the shepherds were all from God Almighty. All she could do was to TREASURE THE MESSAGE and PONDER IT IN HER HEART.

But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen…” (Luke 2:19,20)

What do you treasure in your heart? Give it some thought and thank God for the things that have come into your life when you least expected them. Give God the honor and the glory, as did Mary and the Shepherds. It is becoming more important to look at how God works in people…ordinary people, not the high and mighty of the world. This young girl was a chosen one. The shepherds were of no high estate. This young couple were simply looking for a life together…and then the whole world for them changed. In today’s world, we might say “things fell apart.”

There were strict Jewish laws about forbidden sexual relations outside of marriage. In Deuteronomy 23:3 “No one misbegotten shall be admitted into the congregation of the Lord; none of his descendants, even in the tenth generation, shall be admitted into the congregation of the Lord.” This young couple had much to fear, but God would pave the way for them.

As we look to God for His blessings, do not always consider “CHANGE” a bad thing. Sometimes we don’t know what God is doing…for our good…for the good of those around us…or maybe even for the world.

PONDER THIS.
