Palm Sunday…the ride to death

Palm Sunday is a part of Christian worship in the season of Lent, before the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ.

Jesus rode on a borrowed donkey and the people laid before Him the palm branches and cloaks …honoring Him like a King.   A King was what they wanted to free them of all the oppression in their day.

So much like many, in the modern world, look for a leader to save the world from all miseries, we are warned to be careful about looking from God to a leader… for the Anti-Christ will present himself as that leader with great power.

On “Palm Sunday,” many in the world who are looking for a special leader to save the world, will miss the point… as they did when Jesus rode on a donkey as they spread down the palms. They wanted a King…a KING...A SPECIAL KING…and their hopes would die upon a cross. Christ’s Palm Sunday was a ride to death.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes on Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

We, like those with the palms, may be looking the wrong way for a savior of mankind.  Even then, Jesus knew He must die first for the sins of the world. He would then rise from the dead and ascend back to His Father in Heaven before He would give the world the chance for a heavenly kingdom with total peace.  He said that ONLY the FATHER knows when that will be.

Yes, Christ will come again to make all things right…to bring peace and even judgment. We are told to be ready.  Are you?  That is a difficult question because most of us feel that we should be more…doing more, but remember, it is not by works…but by faith. The thief on the cross next to Jesus cried out to be saved. Jesus told him,” Today you will be with me in paradise.”

The Savior of the world will not come the way the world expects through some mighty Leader. He will come in glory through the clouds when we are least expecting Him and all will see Him… and will know Who He is.

Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him–even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen.” Revelation 1:7 (artist unknown)

What then will the world be doing when He returns? The Bible tells us:

“Then there shall be two men in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. Matthew 24:40-42

Christ rode on…and they laid down the palms. The crucifixion was coming…and He knew that it would be a day of great sorrow and pain. “Father, if You are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from Me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine.” Luke 22:42
